Being born in Truth or Consequences has shaped my outlook on life to be a black and white Rube Goldberg machine. I have always studied and been drawn to the Truth.

My work has focused on human struggles with societal pitfalls induced by the conception of morality, and the enforced standards we try and fail to uphold ourselves. Growing up poverty-stricken and at the hands of extreme child abuse, I feel an urgency in addressing these issues and thus issues of morality before true societal progress can be achieved. I believe that what are referred to as the Seven Deadly Sins along with Karma will define the trials and tribulations a person will interact with in their lifetime, and the demons they will struggle with along that path.

My intentions are to spread the word about the struggles within each of us to remain human at all times, and at times, at all cost. Is it okay to help those who admit struggle? Can we be judgmental without being unfair? I want the viewer to understand truths within themselves through my art, to progress and have a life free of burden. I want the viewer to achieve a visual nirvana and ascend to their further purpose.

I can find a motif in almost anything. I see myself more as an artist than a photographer. The artwork always starts with an ordinary photography/portrait. I find interest in achitecture, furnitures, cars and other design. I am an eager reader of all sorts of magazines regarding these things. One of my absolute favourite photographers is my fellow countryman Knut Bry. He has been a big inspiration for me. From around 1985 I was competing in various competitions around the world, and I won a lot of prizes and awards. The A.F.I.A.P. award from FIAP (Federation Internationale de l’art Photographique) I received in 1990.

After the digital revolution around 2000, I lost interest for several years, but now it’s back for full. I take a lot of pictures every day. I use my iPhone X.

I’m Dutch/Egyptian, retired, but I was a businessman, teacher, inventor and I love challenging tasks. I’m completely self-taught, I never studied art or took any courses. I would say that my personality was formed in an Eastern society and has also been changed and affected by a Western one. My art represents the pain my family and I went through due to my daughter’s chronic illness, and it is inspired by her. One of my first jobs in Amsterdam was working as a cleaner at the Van Gogh museum, I was very impressed by the art and it helped my art career.

Artist Statement:

In 1999, my daughter Amal was born with one of the most difficult diseases, Epidermolysis Bullosa (EB). It’s a rare chronic disease where the skin is as weak and fragile as a butterfly’s wing. Blisters and open wounds are formed by the slightest touch. She is in constant pain, all the time. There is no cure for it and we’ve been struggling and fighting this disease every day ever since. My art was born a year later because of the enormous emotional and mental turmoil my wife, my kids and I went through dealing with this disease, as Amal has become the centre of our attention and life ever since. It was a constant struggle to keep going and reaching a safe shore. I had never drawn or painted before, but somehow on her first birthday, I started making these strange drawings. You’ll find that my paintings are very random, but controlled. In every painting, I try to express myself to show the viewer what I’ve created and what I mean. However, most people who have seen my paintings, also saw something different in them. You can see them from many different perspectives, but they all represent finding beauty within chaos and despair. Recently, after many years, I’ve been told that my art style is classified as “expressionism”.

Featured Artist – Cory Graham

In rural Appalachia, where tradition reigns supreme, an emerging art and music scene has dared to challenge the outside notions of the region. Steeped in history, awash in natural beauty and with a culture rarely visible outside of the hills, this oft-forgotten region of America is carving out its place among the most culturally relevant to the 21st century. Among those seeking to change perspectives and bring new eyes to the rolling hills is Cory Graham. With no formal training, and only a passion to break down walls surrounding his community, Graham seeks to share views and moments not typically associated with rural America. Deeply political, often angry, and with a focus on progress at all costs, Cory Graham’s work shouts with the voices of forgotten Americans who demand to be heard.
