Bio:

Marcela is a self-taught intuitive artist born in Sydney, Australia. She is currently based in Hong Kong.

Her earliest creative explorations were in dance, drama, singing and visual arts. In childhood and adolescence, she found an escape in art and a place where she could express herself without words.

After high school, she completed a Law Degree at the University of Technology Sydney, which saw her work in various jobs from legal to publishing related jobs.

She felt herself pulled back into the arts during the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020. The turmoil brought about by the pandemic, led her to connect more deeply artistically and spiritually. Creating art felt therapeutic and her art quickly became deeply connected to her spiritual practice.

Marcela’s work is based on intuition, mindfulness and vibrational energies. Her works revolve around exploring the realms of the unknown and altered states of consciousness. Rainbows are often found in her works, as a symbol of the rainbow bridge.

Through predominately ink, watercolour and hand drawn digital art, her works represent her way of translating the unseen energies she experiences into something more tangible for others to see.

She hopes her art sparks discussions about other-worldly topics that transcend current human understanding.

Artist Statement:

I try to capture the invisible and make it visible.

My work is based on intuition, mindfulness and vibrational energies.

My artworks are often created subconsciously from a prayerful meditative place, only once they are finished do I come to understand what they are expressing.

In part through automatic drawing and also through accessing my intuition, I challenge others to see beyond current human understanding by diagramming elements of the immaterial world and exploring altered states of consciousness. To have people look past the 5 senses, that is my goal and inspiration.

Catalan artist and architect, I live and work in Barcelona.

My works try to express social and emotional diversity through the face.

Over the years I have moved between styles and formats, but I have always worked with the same theme: facial portrait. I work mainly with acrylics on canvas and paper, although some pieces are made with charcoal, oil, pastel and inks.

My stylistic influences include abstraction and expressionism. The range of anonymous faces runs on the identity of the characters. I try to express through facial features, looks and gestures, the nuances, complexity and contrasts of the emotional state of the subjects as a reflection of the mood and essential human aspects.

Being born in Truth or Consequences has shaped my outlook on life to be a black and white Rube Goldberg machine. I have always studied and been drawn to the Truth.

My work has focused on human struggles with societal pitfalls induced by the conception of morality, and the enforced standards we try and fail to uphold ourselves. Growing up poverty-stricken and at the hands of extreme child abuse, I feel an urgency in addressing these issues and thus issues of morality before true societal progress can be achieved. I believe that what are referred to as the Seven Deadly Sins along with Karma will define the trials and tribulations a person will interact with in their lifetime, and the demons they will struggle with along that path.

My intentions are to spread the word about the struggles within each of us to remain human at all times, and at times, at all cost. Is it okay to help those who admit struggle? Can we be judgmental without being unfair? I want the viewer to understand truths within themselves through my art, to progress and have a life free of burden. I want the viewer to achieve a visual nirvana and ascend to their further purpose.

RAW AND INTUITIVE

I am a compulsive artist…I paint everyday because I have to!

My images are raw and intuitive. Colors harmonize in unexpected ways and exuberance often collides with angst.

Faces predominate my work, many in frontal gazes that meets the viewer head -on; faces as maps that reveal places we’ve been…or may be going.

In the words of Zorba the Greek—

I embrace everything…the full catastrophe, speaking to the human condition of joy and triumph, suffering and celebration.

All my works are in the square format.

I can find a motif in almost anything. I see myself more as an artist than a photographer. The artwork always starts with an ordinary photography/portrait. I find interest in achitecture, furnitures, cars and other design. I am an eager reader of all sorts of magazines regarding these things. One of my absolute favourite photographers is my fellow countryman Knut Bry. He has been a big inspiration for me. From around 1985 I was competing in various competitions around the world, and I won a lot of prizes and awards. The A.F.I.A.P. award from FIAP (Federation Internationale de l’art Photographique) I received in 1990.

After the digital revolution around 2000, I lost interest for several years, but now it’s back for full. I take a lot of pictures every day. I use my iPhone X.
